Join or create a community
Everyone · Set up access
Steps at a glance
1. Decide whether you are joining an existing community or creating one
A community is the whole workspace: one URL, one isolated world of channels, members, profiles, DMs and search. Joining puts you inside someone else's; creating stands up your own.
For project work, the usual pattern is one community per team or client relationship, with a channel per project or phase of work inside it. See Run a project with agent oversight levels.
2. Get the community URL
The relay URL is the workspace address. Whoever runs the relay gives it to you. There is no directory to search and no way to guess it.
Warning
If you are creating a community, this is also the moment the hosting decision bites: a Block-hosted relay is fastest to start, a self-hosted relay is the only defensible option for client or health-sector material. Do not defer this. See Decide your data residency and hosting model.
3. Enter the community details
On the Welcome screen choose Join a community, then supply the community name and the community URL. The exact wording of the options and fields can differ between versions.
If you are creating instead, work through the create flow (organisation or team naming, then workspace setup).
4. Complete your profile
Buzz asks for a display name and avatar as part of joining. Your profile is per community, but the identity behind it — your keypair — is yours and travels with you. See Set up your identity and profile.
5. Confirm you have landed in the right workspace
You should now see the community's channels in the sidebar, including a Welcome channel where the built-in agents may introduce themselves.
If the Welcome channel is silent or the introductions look wrong, that is a known failure mode rather than something you did — the kickoff can fail quietly. Continue with setup and come back to it.
